Oracle Cloud Infrastructure: Migrate, Build and Run on OCI

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is where most Oracle estates are heading — for price-performance on Oracle workloads, and for a foundation you actually control. This is the practical picture: getting on well, wiring it up securely, and running it once you are there.

Overview

OCI is Oracle's second-generation public cloud, built for enterprise workloads — and for Oracle Database and E-Business Suite in particular, where its price-performance and Oracle-to-Oracle support are the usual reasons enterprises choose it. But a good outcome on OCI is decided less by the migration event than by how the foundation is built.

The estates that struggle got the first month wrong: a flat tenancy, everything in the root compartment, loose IAM, no network segmentation, no cost guardrails. The estates that thrive started from a landing zone — governed compartments, least-privilege IAM, private-by-default networking and Cloud Guard from day one. Migration, disaster recovery and cost all get easier when that base is right.

The articles below span the whole journey: how to design tenancy, compartments and a landing zone; OCI networking and hybrid connectivity; OCI security; the EBS-to-OCI migration roadmap and its hidden realities; disaster recovery on OCI; an honest AWS-versus-OCI comparison; and what Oracle Cloud managed services actually cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)?
OCI is Oracle's second-generation public cloud platform, offering compute, storage, networking, database and platform services. It is designed for enterprise workloads and is especially strong for running Oracle Database and E-Business Suite, where its price-performance and unified Oracle support are common reasons enterprises adopt it.
Why do enterprises choose OCI?
The most common drivers are price-performance for Oracle Database and E-Business Suite workloads, a single vendor for both the applications and the infrastructure (simplifying support), and strong core services for compute, networking and storage. As with any cloud, the value depends on building a governed foundation rather than lifting and shifting into a flat tenancy.
What is the most important thing to get right when adopting OCI?
The foundation — tenancy and compartment design, IAM, networking and cost guardrails — set up as a landing zone before workloads land. Most OCI problems trace back to a flat tenancy with everything in the root compartment and loose access policies, which is expensive to untangle later. A governed start makes migration, security and cost management far easier.
How does OCI compare to AWS?
Both are capable enterprise clouds; the practical decision usually turns on your workload mix, existing estate and commercials rather than a feature checklist. OCI tends to lead on price-performance for Oracle Database and Oracle application workloads and on unified Oracle support, while AWS has the broadest overall service catalogue. See our dedicated AWS-versus-OCI comparison for the detail.
Can you migrate Oracle EBS to OCI?
Yes — it is one of the most common OCI migrations. The work is a defined project covering assessment, CEMLI and integration remediation, a chosen migration method and a tested cutover, plus a disaster-recovery design. The roadmap and the less-obvious realities are covered in the EBS-to-OCI articles in this cluster.
